The Step Beyond

It’s my birthday!!!!

Usually I’d be really excited and surround myself with the color blue (it’s my favorite) but this year, I’m suddenly keenly aware of the fact that I’m… Aging…*shivers*

Ages 20-23 were a blast. I was fit (mostly) and by 23, healthy. I was running 30 miles a week and lifting weights. My ripped arms would frighten small children…

Now I’m 4 years from 30, I have 2 kids and stretch marks to prove it. I’m tired, and I sit more than I’m active. My split ends and the dark circles under my eyes frighten small children…

I haven’t hit 30 yet and I already feel the downhill slide to the step beyond… The step into…Oldness…

But really, my husband and I have been together since we were 17. We’ve seen each other in peak physical activity doing 2 a day soccer practices, and running 12 miles like it’s nothing. Now, we see each other slouched upon the couch with cartons of ice cream and baby spit up stains on our shirts… Life is certainly less glamorous than it once was.

So I decided to take this opportunity to age as gracefully as possible. I had a grapefruit and coffee for breakfast.

I know why grapefruit makes you thinner- it’s too much effort to eat! I almost gave up halfway through… Almost.

It’s also my mother’s birthday- cool, I know. And she’s 1 year shy of 50 today. So if nothing else, I have the consolation of being farther from 50. Happy birthday, Mama.

Here’s to another year of being blissfully exhausted and unglamorous! Cheers.

  1. Happy birthday! Wait till you pass forty, ahem, you can be twice as tough but it just takes you a little longer to recover. It’s like the country song say ” I may not be as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was”
Hope you have a great birthday and embrace the unglamorous lifestyle!
