Homestead Update: Kitchen Remodel Progress!

So many times I have taken on a project, only to realize halfway through that there were numerous aspects I had not considered that added to my timeline and budget and drew out the project much more than I originally thought. That’s not to say I don’t plan ahead prior to beginning- but that this house has been such an onion of layer upon layer of quick fixes and make-it-do’s (and each one makes me cry a little) that in order to bring it up to date and up to code, it’s been quite a nightmare of setbacks and delays.

So I’m extremely pleased to say that we have finally made some progress on the kitchen project that is 3 years in the making!

First, I tackled the doors and trim

I also did the exterior doors

I cut out and assembled and painted the cradle for the cast iron sink.

…had my handsome husband sawzall-ing some things for me before I started the painting.

…and then got the first wall painted!!

It already seems cleaner and brighter in the kitchen. I plan on doing the cabinets as well. I had the goal of getting the sink completely done and installed by this weekend, but I decided to take my time painting all the things to make sure that it was the way I wanted it and didn’t need to be redone later. That and painting a kitchen while also needing to use it is quite a scheduling challenge, especially since all the exterior doors are off the kitchen/dining room… So, there’s been the need to wait until naps and bedtimes to avoid heavy use and foot traffic through my painting zone. It’s a lot of “get it all out, clean it all up”-ing. But, this is the best way for me to make progress, one little bit at a time. Hopefully over the next week or so, we can get the bulk of it complete, and just have the smaller detail things left, like cabinet hardware, and trim/edging/backsplash.

It got me thinking about our homes in relation to Genesis 1:27. Our role as God’s stewards is to fill and subdue the earth; to bring our surroundings under our authority and into productivity. That is one of the biggest struggles in my home, as I feel like the inefficiency and clutter tend to subdue me, rather than the other way around. I’ve determined to make my home a place where I’ve planted my flag for Christ and fulfillment of the biblical mandate to fill and subdue. Houses are built in a few months. Homes are built over lifetimes. One little bit at a time, one project at a time, one piece of art, one lit candle, one home-cooked meal, one bedtime story, one song, one prayer at a time.
