Our New Baby Goat

This little guy was born 5/11/21

I’ll be honest, I was a bit disappointed he wasn’t a little doe; I was really hoping for a 7/8 Guernsey doe to breed Fonz to in the fall to improve the genetics of our herd. C’est la vie.

On the other hand, with the AI success rate at about 40% in dairy goats, I’m pleased that Luna successfully kidded this year, as it means we will have fresh milk again! And I’m relieved that our AI procedures were at least modetately successful. It would have been a big expense to flush down the drain.

We will have Fonz ready to breed Honey and/or Luna in the fall. We haven’t decided on importing more genetics or not this year. It would be less of an ordeal since we already have the equipment and know-how and trial/error of 2020 under our belts.

Tentatively, we plan to keep this little guy as a pen mate for Fonz. Haven’t decided if we are leaving him intact or not, as he can’t do much to improve the breed, BUT, he could eliminate or at least moderate the need for/use of line breeding, which is a positive in my mind. We shall see.

We have yet to give him a name!

We decided we like to use literary character names for our critters, so I’m leaning toward Tumnus, from The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, or Tanngrisnir, one of Thor’s goats.

Unless my husband thinks of something better, which is likely.
