My son is so much fun to watch. He is learning and growing and I can't believe how entertained I am by him. Today he's been rather contrary. It's raining outside so I pulled out the box of indoor activities; blocks, flash card games, coloring... Nothing doing. He WANTS to be outside in the rain! … Continue reading My Little Farm Boy
Busy Day in Town
preparation and management are key to ensuring they get glad in the same pants they got mad in...unless the original pants are splattered with pear sauce... Then I get my son clean pants.
The Homestead Balancing Act
Ideally, homesteading is something you establish while you're young and physically able to meet the demands of land preparation and manual labor. I'm only 26, but like I told my mother, I'm not counting on living to 100 unless the Good Lord allows it, so I'm really closer to middle age. Pregnancy and the subsequent … Continue reading The Homestead Balancing Act
Un-paper Towels
First let me start by saying this project is simple, it could be finished in a couple hours. But unfortunately, because of the demand placed on my attention by my two small children, it became infuriating and took over two days. Simple sewing machine troubleshooting took time I didn't have. Distractions aside, I'm really pleased … Continue reading Un-paper Towels
The Step Beyond
It's my birthday!!!! Usually I'd be really excited and surround myself with the color blue (it's my favorite) but this year, I'm suddenly keenly aware of the fact that I'm... Aging...*shivers* Ages 20-23 were a blast. I was fit (mostly) and by 23, healthy. I was running 30 miles a week and lifting weights. My … Continue reading The Step Beyond
Homemade Laundry Detergent
It's laundry detergent making day. I don't actually set aside a day specifically for making laundry soap, I just happened to have run out. So... Time to make some more. My recipe is simple and hypoallergenic, which my son and I require. My husband likes the scent so that's a bonus. Laundry soap ratios: 1 … Continue reading Homemade Laundry Detergent
My Tightwad Transformation
I'm not really a person who could be considered to be a tightwad. I do consider myself to be frugal, or at least I did... That is until I stumbled upon this book: To my surprise, I was already doing a few things to help save my family money and to stretch my husband's paychecks … Continue reading My Tightwad Transformation
My Workouts These Days
Before kids, I remember going on runs with my husband... Or rather, trailing behind my husband, huffing and puffing and trying not to roll my ankles, as he sprinted majestically ahead of me down the cracked and uneven sidewalks of our hometown. As far as pacing is concerned, my husband and I aren't ideal running … Continue reading My Workouts These Days
Mulchy Mushrooms
My son and I were exploring the mulch forest and we found some funky fungi I thought I'd share: Slime mold! Gross!! This rock was particularly yucky...For some reason. "WEEEEEEEE!!" All in all a fun day, but I don't think any of the fungi/mushrooms we found are edible. Oh well.
What’s the deal?
I've noticed over the past several months that I'm spending more on groceries...Much more. There are a couple factors at play. "We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto." I had a seriously skewed perception of the cost of food while shopping on base at Camp Lejeune while my husband was stationed there in the Marine Corps. … Continue reading What’s the deal?
